Hans Madoery is Celebrating 60 years in Sydney

When the “Marconi” sailed up the Sydney Harbour in 1966, approaching the looming Sydney Harbour Bridge, he stood in awe of the striking building taking shape on Bennelong Point.

Little did he know that he would soon be joining the interior design team helping complete one of the world’s iconic buildings after architect J. Utzon’s departure from the project.

Over the past 16 years, after his retirement as an architect/designer, Hans would make Sydney his canvas, painstakingly documenting its architecture, streets, harbour and history through his distinctive panoramic pen drawings

A major highlight of the exhibition will be the first public display of Han’s original 2.4 x 0.75 metre drawing, “Sydney Harbour – Royal Rendezvous”, one of the most popular works ever sold through the Sydney Opera House Gift Shop, that sold over 10,000 copies.

Hans is celebrating 60 years in Oz with a solo exhibition at Tap Gallery in Surry Hills. The exhibition traces Hans’ journey from his home town Basel in Switzerland, to Sydney, the city that inspired a lifetime of artistic observation. It features detailed drawings that celebrate Sydney’s landscape and architecture, with thousands of carefully observed lines capturing a unique sense and history. Buildings, cliffs, foreshores, churches, streets and skylines are meticulously woven together into sweeping panoramic compositions.

“Patience and discipline”, he observes, “make my artwork come alive”.

CoVid,in 2020, redirected his redirected and inspired his creative spirit into a new field. Paddington Markets, where he sold prints of his panoramic Sydney drawings for seven years, closed and the Opera House shop closed. He enrolled in and completed an online university acrylic painitng course. Hans then started plain air sketching street corners from around his neighbourhood in Darlinghurst, his home for 60 years, completing the multi-layered work with strong compositions, elements of design, carefully selected eyelines and vanishing points, completing the artworks with acrylic markers in his studio. Hans has been selling reduced-to-A4 size prints of his “Corners From My Neighbourhood” (originally A3) artworks at his local cafe’ for the past 3 years and is now selling limited edition prints of this series.
