Exhibition overview:Penumbra by Alexander Kharlamov explores deep emotional states and contrasting feelings in a collection of surrealist and classic nudes made between 2009 and 2022 using photographic medium.Bio:Alexander Kharlamov is a fine art photographer and conceptual artist based in Sydney, Australia. Raised in Portugal, Alexander dedicated most of his life to the development of his artistic vision of human behaviour, where his primary focus is the way in which human psychology integrates body and mind considerations. Alexander received his formal education in fine art and classical music in Portugal. He has a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s degree in Management. He also has PhD in Engineering, which he obtained from the University of Warwick (UK). Photography is Alexander’s favourite medium to which he brings much of his interdisciplinary training and experience. His body of work includes primarily fine-art nude photography and portraits. Alexander uses hybrid processes combining traditional photographic techniques in a darkroom with digital drawing and montage. This allows him to achieve surrealist compositions in a blend of old and new technologies, controlling the process end-to-end from conceptualisation to printing. Alexander’s artwork has been recognized by awards, published in books and magazines, and featured both in individual and collective exhibitions in Europe, the US, and Australia.Contact details:Alexander KharlamovExhibition details:Title: PenumbraDates: Monday 29th of August 2022 to Sunday 4th of September 2022 Exhibition opening: Tuesday 30th of August 2022 at 18:00Artist Talk: Saturday 3rd of September at 15:00

ANNA MARY WHEELER’S 2022 SURVEY EXHIBITION AT TAP GALLERY
On Wednesday 17th August between 6-8pm Anna Mary Wheeler’s Survey exhibition will be opened by Knight/Chevalier (K.O.N.M) Yves Hernot at Surry Hills’ TAP Gallery. Paintings made by her between the years 1998 (when Anna was at the National Art School) and the present will be on show.
It hasn’t been an easy journey for her as she had to deal with a major surfing accident in 1998. She broke her neck in 2 places, changing her life forever. Anna had been a competitive surfer on the northern beaches. “The accident changed my life and I became more serious about my art. I suppose everything happens for a reason.”
In third year at NAS, Anna’s painting was strongly influenced by Frida Kahlo. She did a series of self portraits in her Minerva jacket she had to wear. They include a series of portraits of her brother and herself.
Anna says “My painting is figurative yet abstract. I am inspired by the natural world and the world of myth. Colour plays a big part in my painting. I love it! My works are very colourful and painterly in style. The brushstrokes are calligraphic in nature. I am inspired by such European modern masters
as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and Van Gogh. I am also influenced by such American artists as the Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. I also really admire Basquiat. My paintings address such
mythological themes as classical Venus and Minerva and the Sphinx. I have a deep love of animals and often paint goats and cows that I used to see on family holidays in Jamberoo. Paint is an expressive medium for me. It’s a very physical and psychic substance. Through the paint I seek to tell a story. The paint application is just as important as the subject. My work is about dreams, energy and the subconscious. ”
ABC journalist, Katie Brookes writes “Anna’s work has always had a strong use of colour using paint in a textured manner.”
Anna has been a 3-time finalist in both the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship and the Mosman Art Prize. She has also been in numerous group exhibitions and art competitions. Her work has found its way to private collections in the U.K., France, Singapore, China and the USA. She has held 12 solo exhibitions since leaving NAS in 1999. In 2017 she had a show with Janet Clayton Gallery in Paddington, which was received well. She is now looking for commercial representation for her work.
At present Anna is residing on the Central Coast at Horsfield Bay where she has her studio. Anna says “The exhibition ‘Blast From the Past’ is an overview of where I have been and directions I am now taking. It has a variety of themes but what unites them is the colour and the spiritual”. She has just started her own “art merch” which includes clothing, bags and other merchandise, all depicting her own paintings. So far (it is in its early stages) the response has been very encouraging!
Watch this space and please drop into Anna’s exhibition at the vibrant Lesley
Dimmick’s TAP Gallery on Riley Street, SurryHills between 15th and 28th August 2022.
