Artist Statement

As an artist I believe that Art is not just a drawing or visual representation for me but rather beyond that. It has been a key tool and process of discovering myself. It is my visual diary wherein I note and express my explorations. Though my journey began 24 years ago with expressing objects and experiences of my external world, it soon turned into a Self-discovery process. For me, Art is that eminent medium that helps me discover my core soul aspects like sex and spirituality. This accelerated and graduated my curiosity in key areas of Self, and thus, Sex and Spirituality became my subject of exploration which I try to represent visually through my art.

Zeitgeist Visionblur – Drew Hyde

ZEITGEIST VISIONBLUR by drew

Zeitgeist Visionblur is a collection of mixed media collages concerning our present way of living. Lockdowns induced by the pandemic were the catalyst for this series of work. They are a series of agitprop posters, fighting against the grave state of our despoiled planet. As each year passes we grow further and further from nature, that is to say life is out of balance. There is a collision between urban life, technology and the environment.

Our growing population is also the cause of many of our environmental issues yet the topic of population is mysteriously absent from most dialogues. In my lifetime the population has risen from 2.5 billion to 8 billion! Population, rapid urbanisation, deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change ETAL would all abate if we could only reduce our population growth.

The works in this exhibition are trying to address some of these issues. -Drew

Elena Leigh - Behind the Door

Elana, the youngest of three children, was born into apartheid South Africa in June 1958. Being born to a White Jewish family and placed in the hands of a quiet, loving, and spiritual Coloured woman laid the foundation for the central narrative of her life.

Birthed by one mother and raised by two, whilst a common theme in South Africa is not one where the long-term effects have been processed. A multilayered and complex relational template to live with, the narrative from its inception opens the pathway to guilt, confusion, duality, and a life where polarities and binary thinking informs most choices and states of being.

In this exhibition the artist is using objects, images, and stories from both mothers as an expression of her longing to integrate and make sense of the intolerable juxtapositions which informed her life.
