On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of March 2023, 11am – 5pm, an outdoor art fair will be held in Taylor Square North in conjunction with the Sydney World Pride Festival 2023. Over 200 artworks will be on view to the public with a prize for landscape and portraiture, the theme being Postcode 2010 and the Oxford St Precinct.

This community event will recognise and highlight the unique character of its colourful area, its urban landmarks, The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the Gay Mile, night clubs, iconic drag queens, the two large art institutions, the homeless and many other local identities. There’s no shortage of inspiration. There are generous prizes to be won, sponsored by our local businesses, additionally the public can vote in the People’s Choice Prize.

All artists, in all media, are invited to enter the Pride Art Prize. The theme is Inner City, Oxford St, Darlinghurst, Kings Cross and Surry Hills. The entry fee is $25/20 Concession. This includes a free canvas from TAP Gallery. Size must be 40 x 50cm (16″x20″) on unframed stretched canvas, (for easy hanging on the day) or supply your own, which must be of the same size. All artworks need to be delivered to TAP Gallery for cataloguing and to be prepared for hanging by We 1st March. TAP Gallery is open every day 12-6pm.

Local businesses have rallied to support this project by generously donating prizes. Over $3000 of prizes to be won.

My large scale Ink Works on Paper are created outdoors on the ground and utilise wind and water in their creation. I use Sumi Ink which is an ancient Asian medium made from lamp soot. The paper is immersed in water and areas are lifted free to apply the ink. The images created partially mirror the ground beneath so the works become a documentation of place as well as time. The works are created from multiple layers of ink and there can be up to fifty layers of ink in areas. Despite the highly decorative surface I produce I am a minimalist choosing to remove my ‘hand’ from the creation. I do not directly touch the paper relying on wind to deposit the ink. Sumi Ink has inherent abilities and each work aims to display the dynamics of the ink rather than my hand.
Until my 50’s I worked in horticulture and landscaping. Health issues lead me to a career change and I went through the TAFE system to achieve my Fine Arts Diploma in 2009. Since then I have exhibited in the Regional Gallery circuit in NSW.

HOMO-SEXUAL

An exhibition of works that celebrates homosexuality as an enduring part of human culture. Using oblique perspectives to capture male desires, Sam Gatsby Lim and XYZ bridge the valorising of men as well as darker elements of gay men’s sexual lives. This exhibition is an opportunity to explore contemporary male homosexuality and ideas around men looking at other men.

XYZ:

XYZ is a visual artist whose practice has focussed on the various facets that create our identity. He uses photography, college and colour to explore abstract ideas. His passion for homosexuality is personal. XYZ is a meat eater and a scorpio.

GATSBY LIM:

Homo-sexual Gatsby Lim XYZ Tap Gallery
Gatsby is a Cambodian-Australian visual artist and kink educator. His work in photography and performance challenge conventional notions of beauty, intimacy and the queer male body. Drawing from the interpersonal to capture moments of emotion. Working in liminal space between documentary photography and composed, the images are created both by and for the artist.
Gatsby shows a selection of digital photographic prints and Instant film that are captured in medias res. The images are an artifact of the complicit experiences made with the men in the images. The expression of love, lust and the ineffable usually only seen behind closed doors…
