Closing Reception and Meet the Artist
Saturday 12 October 2024, 6 – 9pm
  • Sean Burgess likes a lot of things, but what he really loves to do is paint. Born in North Queensland, since a young child he has lived in many cities throughout Australia and abroad, drawing inspiration from the people, cities, and histories that have shaped his life. Sean’s work has been exhibited in San Diego, Sydney, and Brisbane, showcasing his multi-disciplinary talents.
Known for his evocative pulp paintings, Sean explores deep themes of history, identity, and culture. His first solo exhibition, People of a Time and Place, delves into Sydney’s Razorhurst era, bringing to life the gritty, vibrant characters that defined the city’s underworld. Through his distinctive style, Sean vividly portrays notorious figures such as Kate Leigh, Tilly Devine, Juanita Nielsen, Jack Munday, Nelly Cameron, and Lillian Armfield.
People of a Time and Place captures the raw energy, intrigue, and tension of 1920s-1930s Sydney, offering a compelling reflection on identity, power, and the influence of time and place. Presented at Tap Gallery, the exhibition invites guests to immerse themselves in this dramatic and often chaotic world. Sean’s work emphasises the turbulent lives of these historical figures, pulling viewers into their stories through his vivid, dynamic pulp paintings

PATRICK GRIFFIN

Seaweed can flourish in all parts of the world from the topics to the poles in fresh or salt water environments. We have only managed to cultivate a few dozen varieties, incredibly diversity of seaweeds could help to bring back a balance in our ecosystems through a diverse range of uses. This could happen in a number of ways. Food for Humans and animals, replace plastics, for use in fertilisers, use in medical development in new drugs. Mitigate global warming, and repair biodiversity.
For million’s of years Seaweed has supported our development, we have lost our connection with it. Today world population growth combined with climate change, and a potential social and environmental crisis, gives us a compelling reason to reconsider this forgotten treasure. The seaweed revolution is a fresh hope for all our futures.

IN PURSUIT OF BEAUTY – Andrea Holliday, David Sweeney and Connie Godwin 16 -22 SEPTEMBER. DRINKS THURSDAY 19 SEPT 6PM

In Pursuit of Beauty

Art work is truly captivating when it honestly shows what it is like to exist.  This exhibition is a celebration of the beauty evoked by the drama, the pathos and awkwardness of being alive.  Interesting artists are not interesting because they climbed Mt Everest or met the Queen or hang out with supermodels; they are interesting because they can relate to the misfortunes or the joy of others and can then illustrate the tenderness of their own heart and mind.  The power in art is to see parts of yourself reflected back to you, sadness meets sadness, imperfections meets imperfection, beauty meets beauty.

In this exhibition, three artists come together to celebrate the beauty of being alive. Simply, art makes our lives better.
