Independent Short Films

caught_short_postcard.jpg (41086 bytes)

This month Caught Short screens a collection of shorts that will have you laughing all the way home with blind dates, internet trading, not so perfect uncles and even a little conjoined twin detective action all thrown into the mix. There will also be great prizes provided by our friends at Metroscreen and Icon Films.

Jansa Krsmanovic’s Warning: It May Contain Subtitles is an account of two people who meet for the first time on a blind date, with surprising results. My Bay is a humorous take on the world of internet trading. George is an internet addict but when his web access dies he must find another way to feed his habit. Boris Burgess’s The Truth About Uncle Ron is a comic gem. Greg has the perfect uncle or so he thinks. Until he finds out the family secret that will rock his world. In Good Cop, Bad Cop Brett Nicholas delves into the New York underworld, where a detective will stop at nothing to bring his conjoined twin brother to justice.

Join us for a pre-screening bevie or grab a bite at the Tap Gallery café. Don’t miss your chance to grill the filmmakers in the Q&A sessions!

Date: Thursday 4th June

Time: 7.30pm for 8pm screening

Caught Short Embraces the Chaos on June 4.

After a rather fabulous run of themed nights, Caught Short has bucked the trend and will return to our promiscuous roots – presenting a mixed bag of diverse films for your viewing pleasure this June.

Our thrilling selection of locally produced shorts will have you cheering in the aisles – especially if you’re the recipient of our monthly Metro Screen voucher! Woo hoo!

Keeping with our recent spate of rev head films, Sean Lang’s The Gift weaves together a second hand dream-machine, a narcoleptic teenager and a flock of sponge squeezing car-wash angels in a tender exploration of the bonds that bind Fathers and Sons.

From South of the border comes I’m The Lion by Melbourne director Bill Irving. The film is a fly on the wall observation of the games siblings play and the role imagination plays in dealing with the realities of growing up.

We also screen the moody, brooding Death’s Requiem. This dark epic from director Marc Furnie spins a seedy tale of a haunted illustrator with an appetite for voyeurism.

Join us for a pre-screening bevie at the always exciting TAP Gallery and share in this selection of great shorts, ready for you to pass vocal judgment on! Remember Caught Short is a Q&A session as well as a screening and we thrive on your input!

Date: Thursday December 4th

Time: 7.30pm

Caught Short’s Tassie Bits

Caught short’s final screening for 2008 will be a rockin’ Tasmanian adventure with two of our favourite filmmakers, sisters Harriet and Stella Macdonald, in town to present the latest, greatest, and possibly craziest, shorts films from their wee island home.

The multi-award-winning Tasmanian cineastes, whose work ranges from kooky animations to touching documentaries, have won the hearts of caught short audiences over the last four years. Following on from the success of their work, the Macdonald sisters were asked to curate a Tassie spectacular to wow Sydney audiences. Searching high and low, the girls have selected an exciting program, promising a “chocolate box of Tassie shorts.  Packed with soft centers, dark ones, sweets ones- but beware: some contain nuts...".

The Macdonald sisters present their program LIVE at caught short Thursday 4 December, at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the Macdonald sisters, check out the wonderful world of Tasmanian cinema and toast to another year of super flicks with caught short.

Program highlights:

Snow Petrel Down Under
Dir Matt Tucker
When Matt’s younger brother decided he wanted to sail to Antarctica he and his father volunteered to be his crew. But the danger of the voyage soon became clear when no one wanted to lend them a boat. Unperturbed they set off in their own boat, the smallest sailing vessel to attempt the voyage; navigating (with a faulty compass and GPS) ice- bergs and the howling arctic winds, that stay with you long after this chilling documentary ends….

Snail Tales
Dir Alex Machin
In this stop-animation a love sick slug is doing everything he can to catch the eye of a snooty girl snail…

Copy Warrior
Dir Simon Gross
Well, if Rocky hung up his gloves and went into the dog-eat-dog world of advertising his job application might look something like this…

Catnap
Dir Vivien Mason
a short and very sweet catnap…

Boody Mary
Dir Simon Gross
a Hitchcockian thriller shot in Super 8, about a man on a mission to buy a hammer…
